Board of Distinction Classification –
(NOTE: Please check that your board recertified as a Standards Board in 2007 or later before beginning this process.)
Local leadership teams that have complied with the Standards can move to a higher level of excellence by striving for and achieving the Board of Distinction classification. This classification requires a board operational structure that includes completing the Board/Leadership Team Self-Assessment, linked to a locally developed/adopted superintendent evaluation instrument, continuation of requirements of the standards and other additional criteria. Combined, this ensures a functional “local” organizational structure that empowers the leadership team to manage the school district as a Board of Distinction.
To begin the Board of Distinction process, the local leadership team must first be in full compliance with the GSBA Standards for Local Boards of Education. The Standards process requires the team to continually consider five key questions: 1) Who are we?; 2) Where are we now?; 3) Where do we want to go?; 4) How do we know when we’ve arrived?; 5) How do we plan to get there? In addition, the leadership team is prompted to complete a checklist with improvement action plans if they are needed.
Boards and superintendents (the local leadership team) participating in the Boards of Distinction process mutually agree upon what goals and performance expectations are to be included in the “formal superintendent’s evaluation.” This process assists the Board in identifying performance expectations for the superintendent.
The Georgia School Boards Association and Georgia School Superintendents Association challenge their constituents to reach for higher levels of excellence by implementing the Standards for Boards of Distinction and then the Board of Distinction classification. Technical support is available to assist boards and superintendents to implement both processes.
